TechNation Australia: NSW Police Giving “Social Policing” A Whole New Meaning

  • Duncan Riley · 1 month ago
as someone who skipped the police in NSW gene (my father and grandfather served (generations before they served in the UK) and my grandfather was shot dead in the line of duty for the NSW police, and as a kid I attended the opening of the NSW police memorial in Goulburn...89..90, I don't remember) it is good to see them embracing social media.

But at the same time they need to be showing what they are doing through similar channels to avoid the mistakes of the past. It's one thing to use social media channels to help, it's another to use those same channels to be transparent.

My aunt also served, and before it hit TV I heard the stories.... lets hope the NSW police use social media to be the most transparent, honest cops in the land. As much as I don't believe them to be anywhere near their Vic counterparts today, trust should be built from the ground up. Police, as a whole do a great job in our community, social media should help spread the good word.

    Interesting article Kim -

As a comparison - the Tasmanian Police "Crime Stoppers" implemented a cross-media strategy involving Facebook, YouTube and Twitter this year. I think it's helped to create awareness of what they do and grow community engagement in their Crime Stoppers program.
